The artist draws directly on a flat stone or a litho prepared metal , usually with a greasy crayon. The stone or plate is processed with an acid etch to render areas sensitive to oil or water. The surface is dampened with water as the printer rolls the stone/plate with ink. The ink clings to the ares where the artist made drawing marks, but not to the water dampened areas. When a piece of paper is pressed ( scrapping action ) against the stone/plate, the ink is transferred to the paper. The artist has an original multiple print.
